Inspiration

Excessive social media use can not only cause unhappiness and a general dissatisfaction with life in users, but also increase the risk of developing mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. That's why we created Joy Time, an app that allows you to track your time spent on social media, while rewarding for healthy use patterns. We hope less time on Social Media can bring joy to your time spent throughout the day!

What it does

Joy Time is a retro themed app that promotes less time on social media by logging your time spent on popular social media apps like Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook. In return, you can receive points and achievements to compare with your friends. Points are rewarded on a daily basis based on your rank, which is determined by how many hours you spend on Social Media apps.

How we built it

We built Joy Time using java under IntelliJ IDEA, and created the visuals asserts from scratch, including the design and pixel art that was hand drawn by our team!

Challenges we ran into

This is the first android app we made. We had mentors help guide us in the right direction to get our app functional. Another major challenge was the visual design aspect, since we had no experience designing apps using Java before.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

we are all so proud of getting the program to work, whilst learning/using a new engine to code an app using Java.

What we learned

We learned how to code the basic functions of an android app, such as getting user input as a button, and additionally improved our graphic design skills by making pixel art.

What's next for Joy Time

What's next for Joy Time? We plan on eventually expanding the user base, increasing user interactivity, and adding more social media platforms to log while increasing the difficulty to earn points on the app. We hope to gain partnerships with other franchises to reward users with coupons and raffles to further motivate users to spend less time online!
