Inspiration

The travel and hospitality user journey experiences are ones we are all very familiar with, as we ourselves have and still are, at some point in the year on the other side of the laptop screen, booking our next destination. The processes however are tedious, repetitive and highly error-prone — from entering personal details manually across various services just to make a booking, to standing in queues at a front desk just to get a room key, to creating, and of course remembering, yet another password. With self-sovereign identity, we seamlessly blend convenience and luxury in the travel and hospitality industry, overall providing both guests and service providers with an elevated experience, setting the standards for the next generation of digital identity. We envision a world where travelers can effortlessly manage their entire end-to-end journeys using just a digital wallet, making every step of their stay more efficient, personalized and connected.

What it does

Our project revolutionizes the travel and hospitality industry through the integration of SSI technology into the user journey. Imagine this: you're planning a relaxing getaway. No more juggling countless apps and websites, no more frantic searching for booking confirmation emails, no more double and triple checking that you have correctly entered the right data. Our wallet travel app streamlines the entire journey, from booking a hotel to getting rewards at a spa, all powered by SSI. Here’s how it works:

Seamless Onboarding

Download the app and you breeze through the secure identity verification process to acquire a reusable, secure, and tamper-proof identity credential using VC technology – no more entering of manual data. Tell us your travel preferences – maybe you prefer ocean views or need wheelchair-accessible rooms – and we'll store them securely in your digital wallet using DWN technology.

Effortless Booking

Create a re-usable standardized Login Credential and forget about passwords – with a single scan, you can now log in to any booking websites to start browsing effortlessly. Optionally, share your self-attested personal preferences with the websites and you’ll get personalized suggestions just for you. Similarly, service provider’s overhead of managing and securing user’s personal is no longer a concern, with only integration of SSI core components needed.

Personalized Communication

Great, you’re all booked in, and your booking confirmation is easily located in your wallet. The time is now coming up for you to travel, but under the current processes, you can’t let the hotel know of some last-minute preferences you want them to know, additionally. Through the in-wallet chat, with DWN messaging as the underlying technology, hotels can use AI agents to send personalized messages to the guest, requesting for any additional information to provide a tailored end-to-end experience, as well as reminding you about the remote check-in option they offer. All of this within the app, following standards and complementing SSI technology like VC exchanges, no need for lost emails or random text messages.

Direct-to-Room Check-in and Room Access

Skip the lines at the front desk – simply complete the in-chat check-in process and you’ll receive your digital room key to your wallet. Now, with Swiss Safe Locks, you can hold your phone near the door and you’re in – even if you have no internet connection.

Exclusive perks

Want to book a spa treatment? Our app lets you share your loyalty status across different service providers, unlocking exclusive rewards; don’t forget to share your self-attested preferences with a single scan for some personalized suggestions also.

How we built it

Our project was a collaborative effort, brought to life by a multi-disciplinary team. While some of us had prior experience in the space, others were new but eager to contribute. To manage and orchestrate the SSI exchanges and flows, we utilized Condatis' Cenda, leveraging Azure's Entra system for optimal performance. For seamless wallet functionality, we integrated waltID’s open-source wallet APIs. To bridge the digital and physical realms, we employed NFC technology and SSI standards, alongside Swiss Safe Locks, showcasing how digital credentials can be securely used to bridge the gap between digital and physical worlds, allowing you to unlock your hotel room with a simple tap of your phone. Finally, we used tbd’s DWN technology to build a solution for portable self-attested user data, as well as to enable a unified single communication channel between service providers and users. Throughout it at all, we used open standards and protocols, including leveraging from DIF’s Traveler Profile Specification. This blend of expertise and technology allowed us to create a truly innovative solution.

Challenges we ran into

While building this innovative travel experience was incredibly rewarding, we also encountered some challenges along the way. Integrating diverse technologies and ensuring interoperability was no small feat.

Meticulous planning and coordination were required to ensure seamless communication between these systems, demanding creative problem-solving and close collaboration among team members.

Balancing security and user experience was another key focus. This technology places paramount importance on the former, but with some lacking’s in the latter. We aimed to create an intuitive and natural user experience throughout. Finding the right balance between robust security measures and a smooth, frictionless user journey took careful consideration and iterative design.

Although the technology is gaining traction, this next generation of digital identity is a new concept for many. We recognized the importance of explaining the benefits of the tech, and how it empowers users, in an easy-to-digest and recognizable manner. This involved crafting clear, concise explanations and wording throughout, encouraging and guiding the user.

Overcoming these challenges strengthened both our team and our solution. We learned valuable lessons about the power of collaboration, the importance of user-centric design, and the exciting possibilities that lie ahead as digital identity reshapes the future of travel.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Overall, we proved how this technology paves the way for a future of travel where everything is connected, personalized, and effortless. Building this innovative travel platform has been a rewarding journey filled with significant accomplishments we're proud to share.

We successfully combined diverse technology platforms that empower developers and teams to realize SSI ecosystems like Cenda, waltID APIs, and NFC technology to create a seamless and secure user experience. This required overcoming technical hurdles and fostering close collaboration between team members with different areas of expertise. By leveraging the power of verifiable credentials and adhering to best practices, we built a platform that prioritizes user privacy and data control, ensuring user data was protected at every stage of the journey, and service providers need not have to worry about security measures associated with storage of this.

We prioritized user experience throughout the development process, ensuring our app is intuitive, easy to use, and enjoyable. From simplified booking flows to clear explanations of digital identity concepts, we focused on making the technology accessible to all travelers.

Our project showcases the transformative power of digital identity in travel. By streamlining processes, enhancing security, and putting users in control, we've demonstrated a tangible use case for this emerging technology. Our project brought together a talented team, technology partners, and industry experts, fostering an environment of innovation and shared learning.

What we learned

Following are some key takeaways that will guide our future endeavors in the space. Firstly, the power of Open Standards and Interoperability. Building on open standards ensured that our solution could seamlessly integrate across service providers, systems and platforms. This interoperability is crucial for creating a truly connected travel ecosystem, something currently completely absent in the industry. Rather than creating fresh new identities every time you go to a new destination, hotel, spa etc., you carry your digital identity with you, enriching it as you travel, unlocking and building on loyalty rewards, so that service providers know who you are and what you need from day zero.

Another key learning was the importance of user experience. No matter how powerful the technology, its success hinges on user adoption. We learned to prioritize a user-centric design approach, focusing on simplicity, clarity, and ease of use.

Finally, that the future is collaborative if this technology is to replace current systems. Building a seamless travel experience requires collaboration across the entire ecosystem – from hotels and airlines to technology providers and users themselves.
