Inspiration
As a high school student looking to start experimenting in what fields I would like to work in as I get into college and beyond, it is important that I have the propper resources to gather information on what each field at a company would look like. I built this app to help other highschoolers and undergraduate students to essentially gain more work experience through an application.
What it does
It facilitates the registration of either a student or a mentor. As a student you will get matched with a mentor who works at the company or works as the position you are trying to inquire about. After you are matched both the student and the mentor will revieve room codes through email which they can enter to join a mutual chat room, where they can discuss various aspects of the position at that company.
How we built it
I built this application using various components. The backend main portion was built with django and python, as well as some python machine learning libraries that are avaiable, and finally a twilio sendgrid api to send emails to the users. The simply frontend was build using simple html, ajax, css, and bootstrap.
Challenges we ran into
The main challenge of this program was incorporating the twilio sendgrid api. Many times throughout the building of this project I tried to fix the inconsistent and untimely emails that were being sent.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud that I have built an application that is useable and realistically integratable into many highschoolers and undergraduate students lives. This application I believe can allow highschoolers to gain so much more insight into what work may look like down the road for them. The ability for this application to spread knowledge is something I am really proud about.
What we learned
Software related: Integrating APIs into projects is often that hardest part about building a coding project and throughly reading documentation is important . Project as a whole: It is often important when creating a project to think about the long term vision of the project and see how it can be integrated down the road and easliy be updated and useable five years from now.
