Inspiration

INVADERS! was a world I was inspired to build over a year ago when I was learning how to use the spring spin and spring push codeblocks in Horizon Worlds. I had an idea of a an eyeball attached to a stalk on the player's head, which of course felt very alien to me, and thus I carried on my way with developing the INVADERS!, formerly codenamed 'Cows Come Home'

What it does

INVADERS! is a game in which up to 4 players can pilot UFOs and abduct various animals up into the night sky for various alien research purposes. It is a fast-paced, frantic frenzy of fun that is sure to be enjoyable for all!

How we built it

Over the course of the timeframe, I utilized a variety of different software to craft this game. Coding is done primarily in TypeScript through VSCode, all models made from scratch in Blender and textured in Substance Painter, with Photoshop for some adjustments here and there. It was a LOT of learning but I'm happy to see it through!

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges as a solo developer is burn out. Having to do it all without anyone else to lighten the load is a daunting feat that absolutely weighed on me at times. Additionally, having not been too familiar with TypeScript, it was a big leap out of my comfort zone to employ the fresh knowledge I was soaking up. Regardless, I am pleased with how I have grown in knowledge and ability throughout this process.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Finishing the world! Well, sort of finishing. As mentioned above, the mental toll this journey took on me was not one I was fully prepared for and definitely hindered my ability to get this world to the fullest potential I have in mind. But it IS a great starting point! I'm already thinking of future updates to implement and make INVADERS! the pinnacle of my portfolio.

What we learned

TYPESCRIPT! And that sleep is important. And don't be scared to ask for help when you need it. These are all obstacles that seemed daunting, but I made it through! It is through perseverance and determination that we are able to overcome our obstacles, and that is an experience not lost on me.

What's next for Invaders!

UPDATES! I want to use this game to practice and learn how to involve the community in making good updates. I want to add functionality I had to restrict or remove due to time budgeting and make INVADERS! the best it can be! Customizable UFOs, fresh new wearables, and maybe some more game modes and animals!
