Inspiration
Certain people struggle to recognize and interpret their body’s internal signals, such as hunger and thirst. In busy daily environments, these signals are often ignored until they become critical, which can negatively affect health, productivity, and emotional wellbeing. Our team was inspired by the concept of **interoception, which is the ability to sense internal bodily states, and how interoception technology could help people better understand what their bodies are communicating. We wanted to design a system that translates body signals into simple, actionable insights.
What it does
Intero is an application that helps users recognize and respond to internal body signals. By tracking indicators related to hunger and hydration, the app provides users with clear insights about their current body status.
How we built it
We began by researching interoception and identifying user groups who could benefit from improved body awareness. From there, we created a moodboard to establish the visual tone and ensure the product felt calm, supportive, and approachable. We then designed interface concepts and prototypes using FigmaMake and Figma respectively, allowing our team to collaboratively explore layouts for the body status dashboard, timeline visualization, and notification system. To personalize the experience and make it more friendly, we incorporated a koala mascot that communicates to users in a friendly, conversational way.
Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was determining the appropriate scope for the product. Some potential user groups, such as individuals with obesity or eating disorders, have complex medical and psychological needs that our product may not be equipped to address responsibly. As a result, we refined our target users to focus on groups whose needs better align with a general wellness tool. Other signals that can be included within the product were fatigue and stress, which would expand the scope of the product greatly. Another challenge was designing a system that communicates body data without overwhelming users, which required careful prioritization of insights and notifications.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of designing a concept that makes invisible body signals easier to understand and act on. Our team successfully created a clear interface structure that balances simplicity with meaningful insight, including a body status overview and a daily body timeline. We also developed our mascot that makes health guidance feel supportive rather than clinical. Overall, we believe the product demonstrates how thoughtful design can make complex physiological information more approachable.
What we learned
Through this project, we learned how important it is to translate health information into clear, user-friendly experiences. We also learned the value of refining target users to ensure that a product’s scope matches the needs it aims to address, and that the solution actually addresses the issue. Additionally, we gained experience designing visual hierarchy in the interface, so that prioritizes relevant insights while minimizing information overload.
What’s next for Intero
In the future, we would like to explore expansion into more user groups and additional signals such as stress and fatigue. We would also expand personalization features so the system can adapt recommendations to individual users' habits, lifestyles, and activity. Finally, we would conduct additional usability testing with our target users (athletes, students, and neurodivergent individuals) to refine the interface and better understand how effective our product is.
