What is the problem?
Today, prolonged hospital stays can lead to social isolation and diminished social interactions to even the most socially connected individuals. This further exacerbates patients' overall well-being and recovery process, as seen in the "negative impact on patient mental well-being and behaviour, including higher scores for depression, anxiety and anger among isolated patients" in previously conducted studies (2010).
In addition, despite the critical role of effective communication between hospitalized patients and healthcare workers in ensuring quality care and positive health outcomes, there exists a prevalent challenge where hospitalized patients often encounter barriers that impede their ability to communicate effectively with healthcare workers. Such challenges include: unimodal communication tools such as poorly designed speakers and an inability to specify needs when using call lights, which contribute to careteam's ability to effectively prioritize call requests.
This lack of effective communication and poor social integration within hospital settings not only compromises patient satisfaction but also poses significant challenges in delivering patient-centered care and achieving optimal health outcomes.
TL;DR: In hospitals, patients lack effective communication tools to socialize with others and effectively communicate with careteams, leading to social isolation and poor healthcare. The overlap of both leads to poor mental and physical health that slows patients' journey in recovery, wellness, and health.
Who are Eunoia's primary users?
The primary users of Eunoia are hospitalized patients, particulary those expecting extended stays. Euonoia's total addressable users of hospitalized patients include a total of 916,752 staffed beds in all U.S. hospitals from 6,120 different hospitals- that's a total of 33,679,935 total admissions a year in just the U.S. (2024).
We predict Eunoia to be largely impactful in high-risk groups that face challenges that increase risk of isolation and loneliness in healthcare settings like: immigrants; marginalized groups like LGBTQIA people, people of color, etc; and older adults (2022).
How will Eunoia solve this problem?
Eunoia encourages socialization amongst patients through one-on-one and group chat features based on like interests. Eunoia also features a wide variety of activities to enhance engagement and social interactions.
Eunoia uses tablet technology to optimize communication between patient and careteam members by enabling specification of patient needs and transforming currently existing communication tools into one that is multimodal.
