Inspiration Behind InnovateHER: Fueling STEM Success for Women and Girls
InnovateHER is driven by a profound belief in the boundless potential of women and girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). We are inspired by the vision of a world where gender doesn't dictate opportunities, where dreams are never limited by societal norms, and where innovation thrives through diversity.
As most of our team are not only first-time attendees at TechNova but also first-time hackers entirely, we were initially consumed by anxiety of entering into such an unknown space and had doubts in our own abilities. However, right when we entered the event, we were greeted by encouraging smiles and were pleasantly surprised by the abundance of resources and opportunities offered to us to boost our curiosity within STEM fields. The positivity that TechNova generated, got us thinking, "What if we could have this kind of supportive community and learning opportunities all in one place, available all the time?". Thus, InnovateHer was born.
We were encouraged by the women who, throughout history, have defied the odds and made incredible contributions to STEM. Their resilience fueled the urgent need to create a platform that champions, engages, and empowers women and girls in these fields.
We were also driven by a pressing concern: the disheartening statistic that girls tend to lose interest in STEM during their tween years. We understood that societal pressures and peer influences often discourage girls from pursuing their passion for science and technology. This troubling trend became a powerful motivator behind the creation of InnovateHER.
InnovateHer is more than just a website; it's a vibrant community where women and girls can discover their passions, build lasting connections, and unleash their full potential in STEM.
Join us on this empowering journey. Together, we will foster a world where women and girls in STEM not only excel but also lead the way in shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for all. Welcome to InnovateHER, where empowerment knows no limits.

How we built it
To kickstart our development journey, we began by crafting a comprehensive prototype in Figma. This allowed us to visualize the user experience, refine our design and ensure a user-friendly interface from the outset.
For the initial implementation phase, we chose to prioritize the creation of an engaging mental math game using React. This decision allowed us to showcase a tangible example of our vision for gamified learning. We carefully designed and developed this interactive experience to ensure it aligns seamlessly with our mission of empowering women and girls in STEM.
Challenges we ran into
Right from the start we knew that we wanted to create something that would encourage and empower women & girls in STEM, however, the challenge arose when trying to decipher how exactly we would go about this as we had many great ideas that we wanted to showcase but also many limitations to consider, such as, the time constraint and limited coding knowledge prior to the event. On top of this, once our idea was solidified, we then spent a lot of time trying to figure out what tools would be best to use for different aspects of our project and then learning how exactly to use said tools as most of us are first-time hackers. Overall, it was a great learning experience and creative exercise.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our achievements are a testament to our teamwork, dedication, and adaptability. We've collaborated seamlessly for extended periods, resulting in the creation of a platform that is not only inclusive but also accessible to all individuals. Furthermore, we successfully acquired proficiency in both React and Figma in a remarkably short timeframe, demonstrating our rapid learning and problem-solving capabilities.
What we learned
From this experience we not only learned new hard and technical skills such as how to use Figma and React but also soft skills that we will definitely carry with us all throughout our professional and personal lives. We learned how to think outside the box and be creative with our solutions while also being practical and pragmatic as we had to figure out the best ways to bring our ideas to life. We also learned the importance of flexibility, teamwork and balance. When things didn't seem to work, we found new ways to approach them, and of course, we had each other to lean on for help and encouragement. Similarly, we learned that there's no use in doing a project if you're not having fun as well! Every day of the event we made sure to participate in a variety of activities being held, such as workshops, karaoke and the scavenger hunt; putting the laptops down and just enjoying the experience to the fullest.
