The Inspiration Behind IngredientIQ

Our inspiration for IngredientIQ comes from some of our team members’ personal experiences with not knowing what certain chemicals in our food meant, and even getting sick. After all, who is going to read through every single ingredient and research it to find out whether it is harmful or not? It would be a lot more convenient if this information was readily available online with just a photo of the ingredients and was presented in a way that is easily understandable.

What We Learned Building This Project

We learned more about how to create easy to use databases and APIs with Airtable, as well as how we would integrate image-to-text technologies within our application. We explored existing image-to-text models and also APIs for potential use.

How We Built IngredientIQ

So far, we have created a database and automatically generate Airtable API with all of the harmful food additives. We also used Figma to create a sample mobile UI. We also have a scanner in swift that can recognize text in images and list out ingredients. Our source for additives: link

In the future, we would like to develop a frontend using React, fine-tune our API and backend, and also deploy our project on the cloud.

The Challenges We Faced

It took us some time to really brainstorm how we would put this application together and getting the image-to-text to work.

Overall though, we're thrilled with how IngredientIQ empowers people to make informed food choices! We're excited to keep improving the product
