Informed Dining

The community of food allergy effected people is growing. Dining out for people afflicted can be a nightmare full of endless searches through menus, reviews, and websites just to find an eatery that may accommodate your needs. A mistake in this process can be life threatening, especially for children.

What it does

Informed Dining collects and organizes allergen information and safety practices of establishments. It allows you to select your allergens and displays establishments meeting your needs in an easy to navigate map based on your location. Informed Dining takes the guesswork out of avoiding allergens and even carries a vegan friendly option for the vegan community.

How we built it

We built a webpage with AI assistants to improve speed. We used AI to automate the process of collecting reviews from Charleston restaurants. We used AI to understand the gluten-free protocols and give a gluten-free rating for each review. We used AI to analyze menus and restaurant websites to gather rich data on restaurant menus, including food items and ingredients, and then recommend warnings for celiacs to help prevent cross-contamination.

Challenges we ran into

Finding the best way to use AI to automate all these processes. Determining the detailed qualities that could be analyzed from restaurant patron reviews.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We've created a rich experience that can help people with allergies have a better experience dining out.

What we learned

We learned how to effectively leverage AI to collect, analyze, and present detailed allergen-related information and safety practices of restaurants, enhancing the dining experience for those with dietary restrictions.

What's next for Informed Dining

We want to build tools to enable restaurants to easily share how they prepare their food to provide an allergy-friendly experience. This includes creating user-friendly interfaces for restaurants to input and update their allergen information and preparation practices in real time.
