Inspiration

Our goal was to develop a form of technology that had a societal impact, but also to develop a sustainable development goal. We chose quality education for our topic. As a group we brainstormed many topics, we felt the best way to offer better quality education was to create a simple, yet reliable way for people to read and extract information from a webpage. Many people often have short attention spans, leading them to stop pursuing the subject of which they are reading. With our extension and website, they work hand in hand to offer a condensed version of information, while also connecting them to ideas that support their interests, developing their understanding and knowledge of a topic.

What it does

Our website connects to an extension, each of which was created within our group. The extension is downloadable through the website. Once downloaded, the extension pulls information from the available articles offered on the website, Impact Initiative, into a condensed version of the article. This function allows those who prefer brief reads. Across our website, you can screenshot articles that resonate with your interests and read it for less time. In addition, the AI assistant will provide suggestions on ways the users can be involved in the social initiative they are reading about, allowing our users to make a tangible change in our society by learning more about how to get involved, furthering their education on specific topics of their interest.

How we built it

To build the chrome extension we used the Gemini AI assistant, HTML, JSON, and Javascript to create an innovative tool that contributes to our sustainability development of a better quality education.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, the challenges developed were the developments of the front and back ends of our prospective websites. We discovered that for our prototypes, several of the websites were only halfway complete. Once this challenge was resolved, we had issues running the website links on other devices. We then learned the best way to correct this issue was to officially launch the website, therefore allowing the website to run on all devices.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The accomplishments we feel the most proud of was developing an idea stemming from wanting to better the world and the education of all. Initially, there were significant amounts of ideas we wanted to pursue, but also knew we had to be realistic about what we could do along with our restrictions. We are proud to have worked together as a team, develop our communication skills with one another, and to have developed an idea that hopefully makes it easier for those to learn and retain information.

What we learned

From this competition, we learned that websites are composed of several distinct parts, but also how to persevere and problem solve against the never ending challenges we faced throughout our time period.

What's next for Impact Initiative

For Impact Initiative, we will strive to develop our software into a mobile app. Within our app we will also endeavor to create a Freemium Model. The Freemium model will include two features: Free Initiators and Impact Pro. Free Initiators will be AI powered, allow 3 free uses of our AI assistant, match to the available resources offered within our website, and enable a News to Action mode. Our other feature, Impact Pro will have similar features, but with an unlimited use of our AI assistant.
