Our solution
In a world where large corporations increasingly dictate design standards, and with the rising popularity of Artificial Intelligence as a substitution for individual design, artists’ individual creativity is stifled. The increased use in social media as a platform has also subsequently led to an increase in people relying on social media for accessing art, information, and community. Yet social media culture and its algorithm are fuelled by virality, rather than genuine expression of the self. The absence of individuality and authenticity silences not only diverse artist voices but also further marginalizes artists part of underrepresented groups. Therefore, there is a greater need to foster a personalized community among artists, specifically junior artists, to engage in and maintain a self-sustained online platform that allows them to collaborate with one another to create and discover zines—which is where Ideate comes in.
Our design
We offer Ideate: a creative space to collaborate, create, and inspire, a zine-orientated platform to uplift marginalized voices, create art based on specific topics, and offer visibility for all artists’ work regardless of any monetary or corporate value. We chose to create a space for collaborating on magazines around various themes. By offering a space to uniquely express your voice and showcase diverse creators together, we strive to embody the spirit of the magazine. Revitalizing the magazine culture virtually (allowing for collaboration from anywhere) evokes authenticity. Think the 90s-2000s: Magazines were a huge part of culture, with publications like Teen Vogue, YM, and Seventeen flying off the shelves—which helped youth form communities and connections with people their age. The use of zines are historically, extremely representative of the self, whether it represents a niche interest or a piece of knowledge. They promote risk-taking and creative expression through the support of community. It’s important to highlight all of the identities that make up the self — being an ethnic minority, a first-generation college student, a student with a disability, etc. Ideate’s platform offers allows for easy workspace organization and a simple and easy-to-use collaborative workspace, where creators can work together online and mana, anytime and anywhere. It also provides a space for creators to discover each other, featuring profiles that showcase each artist’s work. Additionally, users can join each other's projects and search for new projects to collaborate on. Users can find zines about topics they love and want to learn more about through a tagging system, along with a daily curation of magazines that highlight underrepresented voices. Ideate gives smaller artists the opportunity to express themselves apart from the social media algorithm and foster authenticity, collaboration, and the expression of intersectional identities.
