Start With Why
People want to help out their community. They just don't have the financial and physical means to do it. We asked the guiding question: How might we offer a way for people to give back who may have limited time, resources and financial means so that we foster a sense of connectedness within a community?
How Humankynd Benefits Humanity
A full stack crowdsourcing platform for charitable causes. Users can create an account and customize their profile with their philanthropic interests and skills they can offer to the community. Then, users can either create their own volunteering project or browse other volunteering projects by other members in their community. When they create a project, users can enter the event details, ask for donations to fund any equipment they need and recruit volunteers. This way, when people have a grand idea of a charitable event they want to run, they can turn to Humankynd for assistance!
How we built it
We first followed the UX double diamond design process to explore our problem space and solutions. Then, we hopped onto Figma to create a brand, grey-scale and high-fidelity wireframe.
During development, we first spent some time coming up with the database schema and creating a database on MongoDB. Then, we did some initial backend server setup, and some initial testing with endpoints to connect React to Node.
We created the project in a somewhat linear fashion according to the user's journey, from signup, to project creation, to browsing and joining volunteer projects as fit.
Challenges we ran into
We are a small and ambitious team of two. This meant that we had BIG ideas with little time and resources for execution. We had to cut out many features we ideally wanted in the MVP. On the bright side, we more time to focus on the most important features which resulted in the compelling solution for our target users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are so proud of completing our first hackathon.
What we learned
The most important lessons we learned over the last two days is to stay flexible and to focus on delivering the best MVP for our target users.
What's next for Humankynd
Community engagement is the most important aspect of Humankynd. To ensure a better experience for our users, we want to include messaging and profile features to foster a sense of community within the application.
