Inspiration
How Many Stars is inspired by a rate everything in your life mindset using stars. Many platforms use stars as a rating system for different aspects of life. there are also plenty of mood diaries that allow you to rate your day. the difference with our app is you never rate the day, the day rates itself based on the average star rating of each aspect of your day.
What it does
How Many Stars gamifies mood journaling by creating an inviting atmosphere using early 2000s blog asthetics and original music.
How we built it
How Many Stars is a static web app hosted on github Pages with a dynamic database using firestore. It was built using HTML, javascript, and css. We did not use a framework for this project.
Challenges we ran into
We had a lot of trouble pushing to Firestore and correctly setting it up. we also had an API key leak that took time to figure out and introduced a vulnerability into the web app
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Katie: Basically programmed the entire app singlehandedly Liam: Made the OST and sound effects. Lucas: Learned javascript and set up firebase, also published the private API key to github Levi: Created some of the art assets and titlescreen Kevin & Ayro: Amazing vocals
What we learned
We are a team of siblings with 2 of us still in high school. the web app was primarily coded by Katie with some help from Lucas Lucas: Learned how to set up Github pages as well as Firebase for static web app deployment. Liam: Learned Javascript and how to specify file paths. Katie: Became more familiar with firestore and developed project management skills. Levi: Became more affluent with logo design
What's next for How many stars?
The most pressing issue is that there is only one user. The user also cannot delete widgets The user is currently able to upload and rate photos, songs, and notes but we plan on adding categories like food, mood, outfit, and more after Hack K-State. We also want to add an in-game currency and store as well as a changing atmosphere based on the average Star rating of the month. the lower the rating. the darker the theme of the journal gets and vice versa.
