Inspiration

Houston is often criticized for potholes. The web app by the City of Houston Houston public works does not make instant reporting possible.

What it does

Instant reporting based on location. No risky driving while filling out the web forms. Verification from other users. Cities/ other cities can use our system to find out complaints and work.

How we built it

Used cross platform react native to build mobile application. We use the user's location and upon submitting the report button will create new potholes in the map and let other drivers know.

Challenges we ran into

We never worked on React Native or mobile application development projects before. We had to learn the tools overnight and find out how to make these pieces fit. It took us some time to integrate data plots into the map as well.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

To be able to create more than a prototype product makes us proud.

What we learned

Creating a product within three days by learning a new tech stack is what we learned the most. Teamwork and project development in a limited amount of time is an invaluable learning experience during this event. Mobile application development using React Native is now another skill set in our portfolio.

What's next for the Houston Potholes tracker

We plan to integrate voice assistants (Siri/Alexa) so that users don't need to open the mobile application while driving. We can build a reward/ point system to identify trusted members. Photo submission by pedestrians can also be a useful feature to add.
