Inspiration ✨🏠

Finding student housing is a nightmare—scattered listings, vague details, and no clear way to compare. We’ve all felt the stress of juggling searches with school. We wanted to fix that.

What it does 🤖🔍

Our platform aggregates housing listings from across the web, uses AI to match students to the best-fit options based on their preferences, and gives landlords tools to promote listings on- and off-platform. We also have an AI score generator that automatically rates different listings based off of user preferences, and generates a whole section that informs the user about the listing with the rating.

How we built it 💻☕

We used our sleep-deprived minds to scour the entire internet to find an API that actually serviced Canadian rental data, and used MongoDB alongside obviously React.JS and Tailwind to create an awesome and smooth user experience. Anddddddd..... some coffee.

Challenges we ran into 🛑🔑

Getting consistent, reliable listing data was tough as we said above, since major companies with APIs lacked Canadian support. API keys were hard to obtain, and even when obtained, there is major scalability issues and also rate limit issues.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🏆🚀

We built a working MVP in days, complete with matching logic and real listings. We also validated demand from both students and property managers during our pilot outreach. Also, getting a full stack website with no sleep is amazing! We are so proud of ourselves even though we had minimal sleep.

What we learned 📚💡

Students need more than just listings—they want confidence and ease of use. Landlords want speed and visibility. Bridging both sides requires trust, smart UX, and scalable infrastructure. Plus, it is important to utilize ALL your resources and also find efficient yet elegant ways to connect our backend with our frontend server! We also learned that Vercel has a 100 redeploy limit.... but that is another story!

What's next for Housely 🔜🌍

We’re expanding to more campuses, launching landlord promotion tools (including bus and elevator ads), and partnering with leasing offices like Oxford and Brookfield for B2B scale. We are also planning to expand into not just student renting, but renting nationally, and eventually INTERNATIONALLY!
