Inspiration πŸ”₯

Researching the lack of accessibility for low-income minority groups in California wildfire recovery and support inspired us to make a reliable, informative, and beneficial service that was easily accessible for all groups to help those at risk take the right precautions before a wildfire, stay informed and prepared during one, and take some of the burden of researching where to get/apply for help off of those already being affected by such major losses.

What it does πŸ’‘

HotSpot compiles all reliable support information for all stages of a fire (pre, during, and post) in one place. It displays all that information in a manner accessible to all demographics. It also displays fire vulnerability and Wildfire Hazard Potential (WHP) data that we hand-created on an interactive world map.

How we built it πŸ› οΈ

Next.js + Tailwind.css for a fast, responsive front end. California Census API for demographic layers. Gemini API for dynamically curated local support resources. Mapbox GL JS for mapping the census data, and node.js for backend.

Challenges we ran into 🚧

We had a lot of trouble accessing and cleaning disparate California census datasets, interpreting demographic layers and rendering them on an interactive map, and automating curation of local support alongside general resources.

Accomplishments that we’re proud of πŸ†

We created an interactive map that visualizes wildfire risk data and got an MVP done for such a big project within 24 hours.

What we learned πŸ“š

Using Next.js and Tailwind.css to create a functional UI. Mapbox GL GS for geodata visualization and integrating large public datasets into user-friendly layers for that visualization.

What’s next for HotSpot πŸš€

Creating more data visuals that compare a selected tract's risk to the average risk to demonstrate their need to start preparing for a fire before it happens. Expand and improve language support to increase accessibility. Curating data for fire crews to assist in planning prescribed burns. Possibly connect with support resources like FEMA and the Red Cross to streamline aid access.
