Inspiration

We were inspired by our own experiences of the complexities of STEM education firsthand, we understand the intricate concepts and length of lectures. The dense nature of subjects often pose a large learning curve, making it difficult for students to grasp crucial ideas. We recognized a need for a solution that simplifies and streamlines the learning process, enabling students to grasp information better.

What it does

HootAI is a wise and friendly study companion designed to make studying easier and more engaging. Learning new concepts can sometimes feel like a forest of new information, but with HootAI, we have crafted a simple way to help you understand complex topics. Our HootAI feature takes long study materials and turns them into easy-to-follow summaries, stores them into your notes, and offers personalized practice problems that allow you to apply what you have learned and test your knowledge. HootAI is here to support you on your learning journey, making sure every step feels manageable and rewarding.

How we built it

The HootIA application was built using React, HTML, CSS, Javascript, and Node.js for the frontend, Firebase to hold the database and OpenAI for the chatbot.

Challenges we ran into

Implementing the backend, specifically managing the databases to store our summarizers, presented a significant challenge. While the chatbot effectively generated text summaries, creating a seamless process to retain accompanying notes following each summary request within the database proved to be a considerable learning curve for our entire team.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of being able to streamline successful integration of OpenAI's powerful text summarization, the implementation of an accessible notebook feature catering to diverse learning needs, and the utilization of summarized topics to facilitate comprehensive understanding of complex subjects. These milestones underscore our unwavering commitment to providing a user-friendly and accessible learning platform that empowers students of all backgrounds and abilities.

What we learned

We were able to learn to work on a project from start to finish with your limitations and what you are able to do in the short amount, but being realistic with the time you have to implement the functionality of the platform.

What's next for HootAI

The next steps that can be taken for HootAI is being able to feature a text to images for better accessibility for visual learners. It allows them to grasp the concept through visual images that can convert from text parsing through the OpenAI and being able to produce images based on the text being selected so the user is able to learn through visuals, to have a better understanding through complex concepts, such as graphing in calculus or reading classical studies.
