Inspiration
The main thing that inspired me to make this website was seeing how difficult it can be to get help from your community -- even when you're less than a couple of houses away from them. This website was made in an attempt to remedy this problem while at the same time, staying simplistic and minimal.
What it does
While the backend is incomplete, the website allows you to interact with people in your community and neighborhood in various ways. You can view volunteering opportunities, donate directly to those in need, buy and sell products, chat with neighbors, and view past events in your community.
How we built it
I made this website with React.js and tailwindcss (a CSS plugin). I first sketched out the user stories and the website design out on paper and completed the CSS and design for each page. I tried to keep the code clean with less repetition and minimal clutter on the website itself.
Challenges we ran into
The primary challenge I ran into was having to relearn states and hooks. It's been a while since I've worked with React so I stuck more to the frontend side and implemented the structure for the backend.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I'm really happy that I was able to get most of the wireframe of the website done in less than 13 hours. I also like the design and color scheme of the website.
What we learned
I learned a lot about design principles and how to manage my time. Creating a plan before I started definitely helped and helped me finish most of the front end.
What's next for Homefront
I'd like to keep working on Homefront's backend, especially with the chat interface as that is something I haven't really worked with (sockets etc).
