Inspiration
The project is inspired by its namesake, the holodeck on Star Trek.
How it works
A greasemonkey script adds a button to the info box on Kayak.com/explore. When you click on the button (which looks like an eye), a new window opens asking you to put on your VR headset and headphones. A panorama from flickr is displayed for the location, and music for that location is streamed from soundcloud. You can look around as if you were there in person.
Challenges I ran into
Hacking the kayak.com/explore page to insert the javascript required to capture location data when an info box is displayed. Issues communicating with the Oculus Rift headset and the browser.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Providing a compelling way to inspire travel in a higher bandwidth way.
What I learned
Stereoscopic projection so that a slightly different image is projected to each eye.
What's next for Holodeck
Fully immersive real time streaming of thousands of locations all over the globe.
