Summit – Hackathon Project Story

Inspiration

I was inspired to build Summit because I’m an active learner who keeps enrolling in courses. Over time, I realized that most education platforms were missing features that I personally wanted, such as tools that make studying easier, teaching more efficient, and collaboration more natural.

What it does

Summit is an education-focused platform designed to make learning and teaching more engaging, accessible, and collaborative.

  • Students and teachers can stay organized with a built-in To-Do List.
  • Users can explore and connect with others through chat, sharing resources in text, images, audio, video, or PDFs.
  • Custom quizzes allow students to learn from and challenge each other.
  • A deadline feature adds structure and accountability for learners.
  • Visually impaired learners can benefit from AI-powered text-to-speech, making course content accessible by listening instead of reading.
  • Teachers get a progress tracker to monitor student activity and communicate with them directly.

How we built it

I built Summit using React, Vite, and JavaScript for the frontend. For accessibility features, I integrated the ElevenLabs API to enable AI-powered speech that brings content to life for visually impaired learners.

Challenges we ran into

Two of the biggest challenges were:

  1. Building and connecting the chat system between users.
  2. Integrating ElevenLabs into the platform and ensuring smooth audio output.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I’m proud that Summit is a working project that others can actually use to have a better learning experience. What started as just an idea is now a functioning platform that combines education, collaboration, and accessibility in one place.

What we learned

While working on Summit, I learned:

  • How to integrate the ElevenLabs API into an education platform.
  • How to design and implement features that existing platforms miss.

What's next for Summit

This is just the beginning. In the future, I’d like to expand Summit with more features, such as:

  • Allowing students to post short videos or reels explaining topics to their classmates.
  • Adding gamified elements to make learning even more fun.
  • Expanding collaboration tools to bring students and teachers closer together.

Summit has a lot more potential to grow into a complete hub for modern, accessible, and engaging learning.
