Inspiration 💭

As college students, we know that it's very important to raise awareness about mental health. We feel it's not emphasized enough in college life even though it's quite a significant problem that most college students face! We personally know many people who have struggled with stress and lack of time or energy which eventually led to anxiety, isolation, or depression, especially during the Covid-19 pandemic.

What it does 🎮

The project is an educational game that teaches students to balance work, school, and mental health and raises awareness of the importance of mental health in an interactive way.

How we built it 🧱

We created the game in javascript and HTML5, the modern standard for web game-making to replace the discontinued Adobe flash player. All of the graphics and animations you see in the game are custom made in Pixilart and Adobe Photoshop, we tried to keep a common pixelated theme throughout the whole project. We mainly used Github to collaborate on the files and to publish them on GitHub Pages.

Challenges we ran into 🤔

This was the first hackathon ever for one of our teammates, and the second hackathon for the other. It's definitely been a learning experience for both of us, navigating the process of a hackathon. Though it was quite overwhelming at first, we are happy with our resilience. It was also difficult to integrate our own custom assets into the game as we didn't know the best practices, and have very little game-making experience so we had to start from scratch and redraw a couple of our images.

Accomplishments that we're proud of 🙌

We worked together and communicated very effectively, the workload was split relatively evenly throughout the whole project. Our game plan was created in a google doc at the start of the hackathon, which we followed very closely to the end. We are very proud to have had great success on one of our first team coding projects.

What we learned 💡

As we had little background in game development, we definitely expanded many parts of our knowledge. Mainly when creating custom assets we learned the best colors, resolutions, sizes, and filetypes to optimize the user experience and seamlessly integrate with the HTML5 canvas framework. We also learned how nice the communities of hackathons are :).

What's next for hi-Stress 🔮

We hope to create similar games in the future to raise awareness about other mental illnesses which affect our college communities.
