Inspiration

As we were brainstorming, our fellow member Shreena mentioned that she knew American Sign Language, and we immediately took the opportunity to create ideas on how to help those who don’t understand ASL as well as others. We researched most problems that ASL speakers face, and the biggest problem is mainly reading and writing English, so the help of this app, will make it easier for ASL speakers to understand what they’re truly interpreting.

What it does

“ASL” detects American Sign Language gestures and interprets them through a camera system. With a simple app on any phone, English speakers and ASL speakers can truly communicate in a way they could never before. This allows for easier communication between the impaired and the opposing party. It will also perform to do the opposite. It will translate the spoken language into ASL gestures as well.

How we built it

We clearly outlined the goal and determined that it would be more of a communication aid rather than a learning tool, as it is more of an advantage to those who already know ASL. We plan to design a user-friendly interface that’s easy to use and doesn’t require too much direction. We coded this program using python on Kaggle.

Challenges we ran into

Considering none of us have much prior coding experience, the process of making this project was a little difficult. We spent the first few hours doing pre-reading and research on different ways people can do this project. We were also unable to finish our project considering the technical difficulties and errors in our codes.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

With our little coding experience, we were happy that we were able to use the help of our resources and mentors to produce some code.

What we learned

We learned designing skills, content creation, project management, and solving real-life issues for the greater good.

What's next for ASL

We plan to go forward with this plan and code a full app. We want to make this as functional as possible with the best qualities and no obstacles in our way. With the right knowledge and resources, we believe we can make a functional and beneficial app.
