Inspiration

We are all well aware of the gender wage gap. As young women seeking to go into the tech industry which has been male-dominated for a long time, we know that salary can be a difficult topic to talk about with your employer. Salary negotiations can be the fine line between a rejection and job offer… So is it ok to settle for a little less?

What it does

This is what inspired HerWorth, a website dedicated to empowering women to advocate and fight for equal pay without settling for ‘a little less’. A data-driven model that informs users of average salary and a look into the wage gaps across various industries provides real data and numbers for job seekers to confidently negotiate their salaries and fight for their true worth.

How we built it and challenges we faced along the way

Throughout the span of 36 hours, our team did a lot of learning. Between 4 first-time hackers, it was an endless loop of running into problems, watching countless YouTube tutorials, getting advice from mentors and learning… A LOT! We used JavaScript as our main driver for the front-end and Flask for the main driver of the back-end while using Figma to help us design our UI and create a prototype.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Being first time hackers, some of us didn't even know what a hackathon was coming into this event. This means we started literally at ground 0, when we started brainstorming on ideas for our project, discussing the implementation and frameworks we thought would be best and following the process of implementing and testing the functionality. Overall, we are super proud of our final working product which we believe fits perfectly into the theme and mission of TechNova!

What we learned

There was lots of room for learning throughout the 36 hours spent on HerWorth. From integrating the data from csv to json format, navigating the complexities of Git and GitHub as we tried to push and pull code countless of times and learning more about the intricacies and features of all of the frameworks we used, each member was able to take away a lot from this experience!

What's next for HerWorth

HerWorth can continue its journey by growing the data set used and combining all of the data sets to map fields together to allow for more levels of granularity in the recommendations outputted for the user. From a business standpoint, reaching out and partnering with various sponsors for funding can help gain awareness and really create impact to women in the workforce.
