Hecate

Inspiration

The inspiration behind our website, Hecate, stemmed from recognizing the challenges and barriers that high school students face when navigating the college application process. We wanted to create a platform that demystifies this process, making it more accessible to all students regardless of their background or circumstances. Drawing from the mythological figure of Hecate, who guided travelers through their journeys, our goal is to act as a trusted guide and counselor for students, providing them with personalized support and resources to help them achieve their academic and career goals.

What it does

Hecate is a college counseling website that provides customized accessible college plans to all. Through a blend of essential information, interactive quizzes, and personalized guidance, we strive to demystify the college application process. Our specialized focus on extracurriculars, internships, and scholarships ensures that students can explore opportunities beyond academics, fostering holistic development. Acting as a trusted personal college counselor, we aim to inspire, support, and empower every student toward achieving their academic and career aspirations.

How we built it

We developed Hecate’s UI by using Canva. Then we developed our website by using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in Visual Studio Code. We were able to build a functional website that provides activity recommendations regarding majors.

Challenges we ran into

One of the primary challenges we faced was time constraint issues. As all of our team members were beginners in Computer Science we had to learn all our skills from scratch. Due to this, we were not able to implement all the features we wanted to initially implement in our website.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of developing a website that has the potential to provide high-level college guidance to all.

What we learned

Throughout the journey of developing Hecate, we learned more about the functionalities of web development and web design. We gained more knowledge on the front end of web development specifically in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. We also gained more experience in UI design using Canva and Figma.

What's next for Hecate

Next, we want to generate AI features that recommend college and university programs that meet their needs. For example, if a user is looking for an accelerated nursing program that is preferably local with scholarships, our AI would recommend lists of programs that meet their needs. Additionally, the AI will be able to recommend scholarships that the user is eligible to apply for as well as extracurriculars and activities to get accepted to the programs they want. We would further like to connect with school admissions to have official approval information provided on our website and build databases of our user statistics on their accepted programs. Lastly, we want to build a supportive community where alumni users mentor incoming students who strive for guidance in the college application process.
