Inspiration
No matter who you are, your health matters. Why should stigma around health get in the way of that? Our game aims to help break down that stigma!
What it does
Our game works just like a regular hangman game, but with a twist! Fill-in-the-blank questions are asked, and you will have the opportunity to guess the answers to the fill-in-the-blank, hangman-style. Through this interactive game, you'll have an abundance of health facts to learn (over 49 facts). But wait! There's a twist. Instead of a man dying, a brain is slowly erupting into flames!
How we built it
This game was made using Java in the IDE Ready To Program. Throughout the course of 36 hours, we met up over Discord calls to discuss our project and code together.
Challenges we ran into
Due to our individual schedules, we had some trouble making time to join calls. Nonetheless, we found time in the early mornings and late nights to work on our project. We also struggled with the algorithm for hangman at times, but we overcame this by referring to some of our old projects. Nonetheless, our old projects couldn't help many of the game's aspects (eg. it had more complicated file reading, so we still spent several hours formatting and finding out how to read in different lines from a file).
On the downside, since we wrote all of our program using Ready To Program (Version 1.4.1), the user will be required to use Ready to Program so they have access to the HSA console.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're most proud that we were able to finish this project on time. Considering how large this game was, we didn't expect to be able to finish the game but we were, so we're satisfied. The other part of this game that we pride ourselves upon is its message. It's always an achievement to have the ability to spread awareness about health and destroy the stigma that surrounds it.
What we learned
We learned a lot about graphics and using files; for example, we weren't sure how to import graphics and display them on HSA console, but through this Hackathon we were able to push ourselves to actively seek out how to do this.
What's next for Healthy Hangman
In the future, we can continue adding to the game's graphics to have it be even more user friendly. We can also add to the amount of trivia we can ask the user, so there will be even less repetition in questions.
