Inspiration
As a team, we were inspired to develop a web application that could help improve access to quality primary healthcare in Africa. We saw the pressing need for a platform that could provide people with easy access to first-aid approaches to certain medical conditions, even before the arrival of a professional healthcare practitioner. Our solution aims to provide people with educational resources to promote health literacy and improve health-seeking behaviors. We believe that everyone has the right to quality healthcare, regardless of their location or socio-economic status.
Our research shows that many people in Africa suffer, and in some cases die, from certain medical conditions due to a lack of information or knowledge on how to address such emergencies. We knew we had to do something to help address this problem. Our team came together to develop a solution that leverages affordable digital technology to improve access to quality primary healthcare in Africa.
Our healthcare platform is poised to revolutionize primary healthcare access for patients by offering a convenient chatbot and scheduling system that allows them to book and schedule meetings with medical practitioners from the comfort of their homes with just a click of a button. Our platform is highly reliable and keeps track of patients' historical records on a database. This information will be used to generate valuable insights and assist in giving medical recommendations based on the user's history. Users can also access their health records electronically, which facilitates communication between patients and healthcare providers, thereby improving the continuity of care.
We are dedicated to overcoming the obstacles that prevent people from receiving access to high-quality healthcare. Our digital solutions are geared towards addressing some of the most important issues in healthcare today, such as underdeveloped infrastructure, shortage of healthcare personnel, limited access to essential medicine, low health literacy, and poor health-seeking behavior. We are carefully collaborating with healthcare professionals, patients, and local communities to make sure that our solutions are efficient and long-lasting. By working together with these stakeholders, we are developing solutions that are affordable, accessible, and culturally sensitive while also meeting their specific needs.

## What it does HealthVerse is a web application that provides users with access to primary healthcare services from the comfort of their homes. It features educational resources, such as videos, infographics, and quizzes, aimed at promoting health literacy and improving health-seeking behaviors. Users can also book and schedule meetings with medical practitioners using a convenient chatbot and scheduling system. The platform keeps track of patients' historical records on a database, which can be used to generate valuable insights and assist in giving medical recommendations based on the user's history. Our chatbot, powered by Azure AI and PowerApps, ensures users receive prompt and accurate responses to their health-related queries. In addition, the platform incorporates an Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) feature to enable users from different backgrounds and geographic locations to have easy access to primary healthcare services.
How we built it
We built HealthVerse using a combination of technologies. The backend of the application was built using Django, a back-end server-side web framework written in Python. The front-end of the application was built using ReactJS, an open-source JavaScript framework used for building interactive user interfaces and web applications quickly and efficiently. We used PostgreSQL, an Open-Source Object-Relational Database Management System (ORDBMS), to store data securely and support best practices. We also leveraged Microsoft technology, such as PowerApps and Azure, to create data analysis and recommendation workflows, as well as deployment and storage services, security, and AI functionalities. Finally, we used Azure DevOps for our operations and project management.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we faced was ensuring that our solution was accessible to users from different backgrounds and geographic locations. To overcome this, we incorporated an Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) feature to enable users with limited internet access to still have access to our platform. Another challenge was ensuring the security and privacy of user data. We overcame this challenge by implementing strict data security measures and protocols. Finally, we faced technical challenges in integrating different technologies and ensuring they worked seamlessly together. However, we were able to overcome these challenges through collaboration and perseverance.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the fact that we were able to develop a solution that addresses some of the most important issues in healthcare today, such as underdeveloped infrastructure, shortage of healthcare personnel, limited access to essential medicine, low health literacy, and poor health-seeking behavior. We are also proud of the fact that our solution is highly accessible and convenient for users, thanks to the chatbot and scheduling system. Finally, we are proud of the fact that our solution is culturally sensitive and meets the specific needs of the communities we are serving.
What we learned
Through the development of HealthVerse, we learned a great deal about the importance of collaboration and teamwork. We also learned about the challenges and opportunities of leveraging different technologies to create a seamless and integrated solution. Additionally, we gained valuable insights into the healthcare industry and the importance of promoting health literacy and improving health-seeking behaviors.
What's next for HealthVerse
Moving forward, we plan to continue improving and expanding HealthVerse to reach more users and provide even more valuable healthcare services. We plan to incorporate additional features, such as telemedicine and remote monitoring, to further enhance the convenience and accessibility of our platform.
In addition, we will continue to work closely with healthcare professionals, patients, and local communities to ensure that our solutions meet their specific needs. We believe that collaboration is key to developing effective and sustainable healthcare solutions that can truly make a difference in people's lives.
We also plan to explore partnerships with governments and NGOs to expand our reach and impact in underserved communities across Africa. We believe that our platform can be a valuable tool in addressing some of the most pressing healthcare challenges in the region, and we are committed to making it accessible to as many people as possible.
