Inspiration

The inspiration for Heali came from a personal experience trying to research treatment options for a loved one diagnosed with Glioblastoma. The process of searching through complex medical literature was incredibly frustrating and difficult to navigate.

What it does

Heali simplifies medical searches by connecting to local hospital databases and applying filters to search results. It allows you to easily find nearby clinical trials, treatment options, and specialized care centers. The goal is to simplify complex medical information to help patients and caregivers.

How we built it

We built Heali using OpenAI's GPT language models for natural language processing and summarization. We also used LangChain for semantic search to match user queries with relevant documents. The app interfaces with like Google Scholar, PubMed, or IEEE Xplore through Brave's privacy-focused search API.

Challenges we ran into

Some key challenges included:

  • Getting access and permissions for hospital databases
  • Managing protected health information compliantly
  • Creating accurate and relevant filters and summaries from complex medical text

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're incredibly proud to have built an easy-to-use tool that can help simplify the complex medical search process for patients and caregivers. The summaries and clear presentation of nearby care options make it easier to find and evaluate potential treatments.

What we learned

Through this project we learned how challenging yet rewarding it can be to present complex information in a simple, ethical, and compliant way. We also learned the importance of balancing automation with expert and community oversight for a tool in the medical domain.

What's next for Heali

The next steps are to incorporate expert and community feedback into Heali to improve results. We also aim to expand the databases and partnerships with more hospitals and care centers to increase access. Our goal is for Heali to be a helpful starting point for anyone beginning their medical search.
