According to the World Health Organization, 61% of elderly individuals prefer to stay in their homes, but there is a lack of support. Additionally, in 2024, 40% of individuals over 80 years old lived alone, according to the National Institute of Statistics. Between October 1 and November 15, 2024, the GNR identified 42,873 elderly individuals living alone, isolated, or in vulnerable situations as part of the Censos 2024 operation.
One of the main concerns for families and healthcare providers when they are away from the elderly is falls. This device aims to detect falls by using variables such as an accelerometer, fall duration, and height, and then alert caregivers. It also monitors other parameters that can be measured at the wrist, such as heart rate, to continuously monitor the user's condition and alert to "critical" situations.
The device also comes with a small application that suggests daily activities to encourage exercise and community engagement, thus combating isolation. Finally, the more activities the user completes, the greater the benefits, which may include discount vouchers for supermarkets. With Sonae as a partner in this hackathon, users will be able to enjoy exclusive discounts across its various brands and services. This partnership strengthens the project’s impact, creating an ecosystem where well-being and commerce come together to improve the quality of life for the elderly.
Our project is not just about the present—new add-ons can be incorporated in the future, further expanding the watch’s possibilities and establishing it as an essential tool for safety, social interaction, and health promotion.
