Inspiration
We gained inspiration through the pre-existing State Farm app, as well as other insurance applications currently on the market.
What it does
Our app enhances the small business experience through State Farm. Giving the user a more customized experience with their insurance and business.
How we built it
We began with first identifying the problem. What was missing in the current model? To do this we searched through the State Farms website and mobile app to see what is offered. What we found is that Small Businesses are not as equally represented as something like Life Insurance.
We continued our research by doing quick interviews, we utilized the State Farm representatives to understand more about the capabilities of the application. Additionally, we interviewed two small business owners to understand their frustrations, which were quite similar with limited interactions. We also looked at the reviews for the app, which were an even mix of poor and happy. The pain points tended to be issues of logging in and transparency in their bills.
We did a deep dive of what the app had to offer noting features and how to navigate through the app. We noticed that the app did not offer anything relating to Business Insurance unless you already had a policy.
We decided instead of integrating a business portal into the app, it would be more beneficial to create a companion app. This meant our app was more centralized to our business owners. We continued by creating potential features and itemizing them under tabs. We continued to ideate and design our screens. Finally, we concluded our project by prototyping the screens through Figma.
Challenges we ran into
Our first challenge was trying to find a design system for State Farm. We had to create one from scratch finding similar fonts, colors, and icons.
We also were unable to enter the app ourselves. The State Farm reps helped with being able to see all the tabs and the hidden info we couldn’t see with screenshots.
Finally, we had to familiarize ourselves with insurance types.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the user research and user testing that we conducted which heavily influenced every part of our design.
What we learned
We learned that the current small business insurance system is very dependent on human interaction between customers and agents. We also learned the importance of design systems and were able to begin learning how to use them within our designs. Thirdly, there should be a fine balance for transparency. Finally, self-service is very important to customers.
What's next for the HackUTD Project
Identify more agent interactions that can be made efficient with mobile interactions.
