Walk Me There is an application meant to keep people safe on the streets. People can rate the safeness of streets, and there’s an Emergency button in case of an assault.

Inspiration

A Chicago resident has a 1 in 91 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime, such as robbery, assault, and murder. A Detroit resident has a 1 in 49 chance of becoming a victim of a violent crime. With such high crime rates, pedestrians walking alone are extremely at risk of getting attacked. We developed this app with high-crime city residents in mind.

How we built it

We used React-native and Node.js for the programming, and Expo client to test the apps on our phones. When we worked, it was a mix of talking for 15 minutes and grinding for 2 hours

Challenges we ran into

We had trouble coordinating what to work on at times, but after we organized our tasks better, we got things going. We began our project with no previous experience in React-Native. We had to learn the syntax and functions of the program.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re glad that we could make an app that could potentially benefit the community. We started off knowing no React-js and none of us had substantial experience in Javascript, but we were able to create a functioning app. Secondly, we

What we learned

We learned how to code using React-Native and create a functional program. We also learned to comment the code so everyone could understand what was happening. In addition, we learned how to learn new things quickly.

What's next for Walk Me There?

We plan to make the UI more intuitive and crisp. We also plan to extend this app with a Google Maps API to find quick and safe walking routes, implement a system of accounts so criminals can’t spam streets with “safe” ratings, and use a search bar for users to look up streets.
