Inspiration
One of our team members' (Tafadzwa's) personal experience with the UCAS clearing process highlighted a key issue for her that we decided to try and solve through the development of a web app.
What it does
Gives students access to a centralised list of all of the courses that are available on clearing along with the University so that they can select which course and at what University they would like to 'clear' into.
How we built it
Using HTML and CSS, some backend databases were being worked on but there wasn't enough time to implement it.
Challenges we ran into
formatting the options that the students would have access to and what would be appropriate for their demographic. Despite 'Adjusting' often being described as a slightly different process, all in all, it runs the same as 'Clearing'. While we wanted to make a slightly separate section for adjustment, we didn't want to necessarily overcomplicate it for a generation with a notoriously short attention span. therefore, we stuck to 3 simple options that would cover the needs of as many people as possible.
In addition to this, we initially used some PHP to connect some of the html pages to one another using submission buttons, however, this was going to be incompatible with Google Cloud server we intended to use so we left it.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are really proud of the general user design, product idea and its purpose. We feel that it will help optimise one of the most time-consuming parts of the clearing process.
What we learned
We have learned how to collaborate and communicate well. Drawing in each person's strengths and making sure that nobody is left out. Where one or two team members may not have been familiar with a concept we all put our heads together to find resources that would help each other as well as making sure that we always explained the parts of the work that we were doing.
What's next for hackFreshers_CirrusChallenge
We hope that our idea can be taken further for more development and eventually, use in the real world so that clearing can be made more efficient, even in unexpected times like the Covid-19 pandemic.
