Inspiration

Linux has always been the one operating system that turn people away because of its complex terminal commands and minimal software compatibilities. As a Computer Science student who uses Linux daily, I highly encourage everyone to give Linux a try. This is the reason why me and my team decided to create a simple terminal that can familiarize easy and commonly used Linux commands.

What it Hacketh?

Hacketh is a minimal Bash terminal designed to welcome new Linux users who may still be hesitant about using the terminal or Linux as a whole. With hackalist and about being an Hacketh exclusive command, user will be able to learn, understand, and test out each of the common Linux commands available.

How we built it

Hacketh is built using Unity Game Engine which it can be considered more as a game rather than an unfamiliar console. There is no specific goal, which gives the user the freedom to use whatever command they wish. By using Unity, our team was able to significantly reduce the production time instead of spending hours creating the user interface manually.

Challenges we ran into

  • Visual presentation.
  • Command implementation.
  • Time management.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Able to finish the project in time.
  • Have reasonably polished finish for the time spent.

What we learned

We have learned that even with a great idea, implementing and executing it to the fullest within a limited time is not an easy task. Managing our time while still have quality control is a skill we definitely required within these few days.

What's next for Hackath?

Continuation of this project will need to be done in a way that can target wider audiences who have not had the chance or still hesitant about learning Linux because of the terminal. Next step would be to improve upon the visuals, adding more commands, and fixing minor scroll functionality.
