Inspiration

The idea for Guy App came from a common phrase: "I know a guy." Whether it’s finding a reliable mechanic, a trustworthy tutor, or a freelance designer, we often rely on personal recommendations. Yet, these valuable connections are scattered across social media platforms or tucked away in memory. We wanted to build an app that centralizes and simplifies this process, making it easier to find professionals through trusted networks.

What it does

Guy-App aggregates our contacts and provides a search feature to find professionals based on skills or services. When users search for a profession like "mechanic," the app displays profiles from their network or their friends' networks. Users can connect directly to request an introduction or their services. It’s a way to bridge trust, convenience, and utility.

How we built it

  • Frontend: React Native with Expo in Typescript, Javascript
  • Backend: Python, OpenAI's API
  • Database: Stored user profile, availability, skills, and contact information in Firebase
  • UX Design: Figma

Challenges we ran into

  • Keeping contact suggestions dynamic and relevant without overloading the database posed performance challenges.
  • With limited time during the hackathon, we had to focus on the core features while keeping the design intuitive

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Functional Prototype: Successfully developed a working prototype of Guy-App
  • User-Friendly Interface: Designed a clean, intuitive user interface in React Native
  • Data Handling: Leveraged Firebase for real-time updates, ensuring dynamic contact suggestions and smooth user interactions.
  • Innovative Concept: Created a unique solution to bridge trust-based recommendations with modern technology, making personal connections more accessible.

What we learned

  • The importance of user-centric design for creating an intuitive and accessible interface.
  • Strategies to ensure data privacy and user trust in social networking apps.

What's next for Guy App

  • Adding API integrations to include social platforms to aggregate our connections
  • Adding a recommendations feature based on user reviews and endorsements.
  • Implementing advanced search filters for location, availability, and specific skills.
