GUARDIAN is always by your side. The app is designed to empower women through accessible SOS features, alerts to contacts and quick directions to safe places. With GUARDIAN, you'll never walk alone.

Inspiration

Have you clutched your phone just a little tighter when walking alone? Have you ever felt primed, ready to run, to fight on your journey home? Chances are that if you have the fear has influenced you in whether you would go to an event, whether you could do something.

What it does

GUARDIAN has three main features:

SOS

  • Quick access to emergency services from the app
  • Automatic dialing from triple-clicking the lock button

Alert

  • Send your location to trusted contacts
  • Let your trusted contacts know when you're in danger automatically

Safe Place

  • Quick directions to the nearest safe places (ie: spaces with other people)
  • Safe places are ranked by the closest open building

How I built it

We have used the following components in building guardian:

  • Firebase authentication for signing up users.
  • Google maps api for fetching safe places.
  • Twillio api for sending sms to mobile numbers.
  • Flutter for app development.
  • Figma for the UI Design.

Challenges I ran into

This was the first time for us to use the Twilio API, we had some problems trying to set up an app with Twillio but somehow we managed to do that with the help of Google.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

We are proud to have completed our project, we dreamt big and encountered problems along the way but we stuck through till the end. Our biggest accomplishment was at 3 A.M. when we finally got the Android Emulator running with our aesthetically pleasing layout. Although, two out of three of our teammates have never used Flutter or API's we were determined to stay motivated and see our project in its finished glory. We are proud to have conquered time zones, sleepiness, brain fog all worth the reward of making new friends and learning new skills.

What I learned

We learned many things this weekend, how to use Flutter, learning to code through a new IDE, and the numerous features an app can have. We also learned about the implementations of API’s and the vast applications of it.

What's next for GUARDIAN

GUARDIAN is not just a safety app that protects you but gives you the agency to protect yourself. To that end, in the future we hope to integrate tips in self-defense, the most effective way to call for help, and most important to continuously empower our users and women around us.
