DISABILITY ISN’T A BOUNDARY TO LOOKING AND FEELING YOUR BEST

The name "GRPVYN" is a play on the colloquialism heard it through the grapevine.

TO HEAR SOMETHING THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE, IS TO LEARN OF, OR BE TOLD INFORMATION INFORMALLY BY SOMEONE WHO WAS TOLD IT BY SOMEONE ELSE.

Beauty enthusiasts with diverse needs often struggle to find the right hair care and cosmetic products that meet their unique requirements. This often leads to wasted time, money, and environmental resources. Additionally, the lack of accessibility and inclusivity in the beauty industry can create frustration and isolation for individuals seeking to connect with others who share their beauty interests and needs.

What it does

There is a disconnect between the unmet beauty & hair care needs of enthusiast and the e-commerce destinations that are available to them, platforms that exist today falter in how they serve enthusiast in discovering the “right” products and accessible services that meet their requirements.

The Review Factor Makeup and beauty lovers are inundated and choosing amongst a sea of products for their specific beauty needs, based on faceless reviews. Yet reviews factor about 80% into their final purchase decisions according to online surveys. Similarly when it comes to accessibility those who discover products or services that address their needs a likely to rave, review and share those products with others.

Community is the New Counsel. Humans are social beings. Mutual aid and trust strengthen our communities. People rely on each other.

Save Time Eliminating the daunting task of sifting through hundreds of beauty products for specific beauty needs/goals in an accessible manner.

Save Money Relying on the trial and error processes of the e-community, to provide the most likely product(s) to work for user’s specific beauty needs/goals.

Connect via Shared Experiences Build an diverse e-community where users can connect through an “inclusive ecosystem” of storytelling (reviews) and shared beauty experiences.

How we built it

Using a combination of C# on the backend with .NET Core APIs and Expo React Native on the frontend.

Challenges we ran into

Mostly finding time to put everything together and ultimately get as far as we wanted on the mobile app side.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Honestly pulling everything together in such short time and the information we learned about how to foster and create more inclusive communities in the beauty space.

What we learned

7 million adults (16.3% of the noninstitutionalized adult population) in the United States have difficulties in physical functioning. (Source: CDC)

4 million adults (7.8% of the noninstitutionalized adult population) in the United States are unable or find it very difficult to walk a quarter mile. (Source: CDC)

In the 34 developed countries it is estimated that 1% or 10,000,000 people require a wheelchair

In the 156 developing countries it is estimated that at least 2% or 121,800,000 people require a wheelchair

CONSUMERS ARE MORE LIKELY TO REMAIN LOYAL TO BUSINESS THAT OFFER ACCESSIBLE SERVICES

Deaf people are looking for retailers who understand their specific needs. Once they have found a business who offers that level of service, there are more likely to remain loyal as finding that service elsewhere will be challenging
