Inspiration
Our inspiration for the project came from a persisting problem in our personal experiences. Between the both of us, the situation of one encouraging the other (who we shall not specify) to go out and take a walk is a view that isn't uncommon to see! Thus, we decided to come up with the idea of a fitness app that helps you pre-calculate a route for your travels, as a way to encourage those who feel daunted by the prospect of finally starting an exercise routine and helping them take their first step in building a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, we wanted to build our app into a platform that is not only useful in terms of maintaining proper physical health, but also a platform that is educational and fun. As enthusiasts of nature, this factor became dedicated to user features for learning about various types of plants, and also the ability to maintain and grow your own garden. Thus, GreenSteps was born!
What it does
GreenSteps motivates users to go outside using a mobile game interface by tracking their daily walking progress and turning them into levels. By reaching milestones or completing quests one could receive game currency which they could use to buy virtual plants that give interesting facts about real plants.
1. Social Impact In GreenSteps, we hope to tackle 3 main goals. First, by creating an app that is visually and socially engaging, we encourage our app users to keep up their personal goals on exercise. Community and friend leaderboards are added to let the user view how their own progress compares to those around them, driving them to work towards reaching their own ranking. Incentives such as missions, badges, and currency are also implemented for this purpose. Furthermore, with features to auto-generate map routes and personalized daily quests that split a journey into multiple smaller steps, we facilitate the user's mental challenge of starting tasks such as taking a jog. Secondly, we aim to educate those who use our app on the amazing little known facts and details on various plants. All of this information can be found by simply clicking on the information icon of a plant in a shop, or by clicking on the plant directly in the Greenhouse. Leveling up through earning EXP on quests and badges will allow the user to unlock plants from different terrains, both for purchase and for learning! Lastly, the app intends to be a fun, yet mentally-soothing way to destress with its colourful graphics, pleasant music, and straightforward gameplay.
Bonus Goal: While this is not the main focus of our app, we also wanted to incorporate elements of positive social impact within our project. Thus, for special holidays and dates (etc. Thanksgiving or Earth Day), users are prompted to add an extra destination to their stop-- whether this is a foodbank for donations, or a walk in a stream where users are encouraged to clean up the litter and trash they see.
2. Business Value The intuitive yet effective design of GreenSteps makes the project easy to implement in a business setting. As the focus of the app is concentrated on social impact, we believe that it would be most suitable for the core features of the app to remain free and accessable to every user. However, additional enhancements to further streamline the user experience can be included in a membership package. This features can include optimized map routes, as well as further tiers in the plant species.
How we built it
We built the GreenSteps prototype using Figma.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Prior to starting this project, none of the team members were very experienced with Figma (one who had only played around with the platform briefly many months ago and the other who had never seen it at all). Even excluding the final product (which we are also proud of!) we found the experience to be very useful and applicable in terms of acquiring design skills needed for our future professsions.
What's next for GreenSteps
Although we have included simple features on the app to allow users to interact with friends and visit their friend's gardens, we hope to further extend these features into something bigger. Especially in the case of social good events, we hope to design a forum and sharing feature that would allow users to take photos of the various clean up efforts, or even just a beautiful scenery that they have come across. This would help in building GreenSteps into a global community that can share their individual passions for fitness and nature.
