Inspiration
We understand that air pollution and lack of environmental sustainability is becoming an increasingly important issue. As residents of the GTA, we experience first hand the large amount of traffic, pollution and smog in the area and thus, want to promote urban sustainability to help educate individuals. With the way people continue to treat the environment, animals would soon no longer have homes. We decided that taking initiative upon ourselves and our community to plant trees to increase urban sustainability would be a feasible solution.
What it does
With two major identified areas to plant in, green areas and urban areas. Users will be able to learn the importance of planting certain trees in these areas as well as how to maintain them. Lastly, users can also learn more about the Toronto Tree Planting Strategy in order to further their understanding on the importance of planting trees.
How we built it
We created our game with the use of python and pygame. We created different graphics such as a moveable player, two types of trees, text boxes and urban environments. Through research we found on the types of trees that are best to plant in urban areas. Lastly, we coded different features such as pop up messages as well as the ability to plant in the two specific urban areas.
Challenges we ran into
Overall it ran pretty smoothly but since we don't have much experience in game development, there were some areas with configuring graphics and code that took a while.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of our learning process and the impact our game could potentially have as it helps people learn the importance of increasing sustainability in an interactive game, making them more inclined to continue further their understanding.
What we learned
We learned the importance of creating a simple plan first and then expanding our ideas. By creating a difficult idea with several complex parts it became difficult to stay motivated.
What's next for Green Toronto
We want to continue expanding our game to add more features and variety.
