Inspiration

Our inspiration came from the Environmental and Sustainability Hack. We made a detective game based on the theme of the Hackathon.

What it does

In this game, the player takes on the role of a pollution detective who must investigate the pollution of a lake near a factory. The player must use scientific methods to gather evidence and analyze data to identify the source of the pollution and the responsible party.

The game includes a range of interactive activities, such as collecting water samples, analyzing data on pollution levels, and conducting interviews with factory workers and other stakeholders. As the player gathers more evidence, they can use a map to track the source of the pollution and make connections between different pieces of evidence.

Ultimately, the player must present their findings to a judge and convince them to hold the responsible party accountable for the pollution.

How we built it

Katherine used Procreate to draw the sprites with character references from Patricia's drafts and the storyline. Suboohi designed the graphics of the game using Canva. Maleeha used VS Code and Pygame to incorporate the graphics and made it interactive. Patricia used Unity and C# to unify all parts of the project.

Challenges we ran into

In the beginning, our group was undecisive of selecting the best programming language. In the end, we decided to create whatever suits best for each one of us.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We all successfully learned to use new software and got familiarized with the platform. We came up with a plan that we all agreed on and we reminded

What we learned

We learned to collaborate with each other by proposing problems and giving advice. Katherine learned to use Procreate and the built-in functions. Suboohi learned to use Canva and its free resources. Maleeha developed her skills upon Pygame and learned its limitations. Patricia learned to use Unity for the animations. Despite our different roles, we all learned to remind each other to sleep early but none of us was successful XD.

What's next for Green Clues

To impact the world in the future, an idea is to work with teachers and students in secondary and post secondary education. Students could help to find real-world places that are affected by pollution. This can be an assignment that needs to be checked over by the professors, teacher assistants, or it can be checked by some hired specialists. After verification, these places could be incorporated into the game for secondary students. How cool would it be for them to be part of making a game that they could play?

One idea is that the game can later be incorporated into school labs. Another idea is that since high school students require a minimum of 20 volunteer hours, it would be really cool if they could go on a field trip with their teachers and try to think of ways, or perform actions towards a certain polluted area. Of course, if the trip was actually planned, it would need to consider the safety hazards such as the severity of the infected area, the necessity of protective equipment, etc.

We’ve always been taught about pollution awareness, and it should be time to pass that point and go into action. There are so many students across Canada, if students all start to take action, it would probably be an impactful driving force of action for those who claim to be environmentalists. But all in all, the goal of our game is to call for actions and plan ways that may be used in a real world situation.
