Inspiration

Gotham City’s dark, gritty atmosphere and Batman’s timeless legacy inspired our project. The iconic rivalry between Batman and the Joker, set against the backdrop of a high-stakes bank heist, sparked our creativity and drove us to craft an immersive experience that captures the essence of these legendary characters and their environment.

What it does

In our game, you step into the role of Batman during a daring bank heist orchestrated by the Joker. Players are challenged to battle through waves of goons, using a dynamic combat system and a ticking timer that adds urgency to the mission. The game combines strategic action with a realistic urban setting, providing an engaging narrative that draws you deep into the world of Gotham City.

How we built it

We built the game using Unreal Engine 5 as our core platform, starting with its robust city sample project to recreate a believable Gotham City. The development process involved integrating an open-source Batman model for the hero and a Paragon character model for the enemy mobs. We utilized Mixamo for initial rigging and animations, further enhancing the combat sequences with the RamsterZ animation pack. This blend of diverse assets and tools allowed us to craft a cohesive and immersive gaming experience.

Challenges we ran into

The journey was filled with technical and creative challenges. One of the main hurdles was integrating animations from different sources while ensuring fluidity and consistency in character movement. Merging various assets to achieve a unified visual style required meticulous adjustments to textures and shaders. Balancing the combat system to be both challenging and intuitive also demanded multiple iterations and rigorous playtesting, all while managing the constraints of a tight hackathon deadline.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are particularly proud of our ability to seamlessly integrate diverse assets into a cohesive, immersive environment that truly reflects the essence of Gotham City. Developing a fluid and responsive combat system that maintains strategic depth, along with overcoming significant technical challenges under tight deadlines, stands as a testament to our creativity, teamwork, and commitment to quality.

What we learned

This project has been an invaluable learning experience. It deepened our understanding of Unreal Engine 5 and honed our skills in asset integration, performance optimization, and iterative game design. We learned the importance of creative problem-solving and effective collaboration, particularly when working under pressure, which ultimately refined our approach to developing engaging and technically robust gameplay.

What's next for Untitled

Looking ahead, our plans for Untitled include further refining the combat and timer systems to enhance gameplay balance. We aim to expand the narrative, introduce additional levels and characters, and explore multiplayer capabilities. Continuous optimization of the urban environment is also on the roadmap as we push the boundaries of immersive gameplay and strive to capture the ever-evolving spirit of Gotham City.
