Inspiration

Have you ever scrolled through Google street view and seen random people doing mundane things? Sometimes those people are not just regular humans doing regular things. To someone else, this preservation of this human means the world to them. Sometimes, it's just some people having fun and wanting to be immortalized on Google street view. Whatever the story may be, it should be captured and celebrated!

What it does

Introducing Google Maps Memories! A simple and beautiful gallery for all of those special moments caught on Google street view.

How we built it

During this project, we were able to use a lot of technologies. Our main stack is T3 with Auth0, our interactive globe was built using the React Globe.gl library, create and edit pages use the Google Maps API to embed an interactive map, and the memory page itself uses the Google Streetview API to get a still of the specific location and point of view that the user saved.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many challenges during the project like dealing with Google's complex Maps and Streeview APIs, formatting the globe to match our intended aesthetic, and numerous other small bugs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Despite those hardships, we are very proud to have built a polished and aesthetically appealing app.

What we learned

We learned the importance of project scoping and time framing. We started off with a simple idea and there were many times when team members voiced their concern for how simple the project was. However, as we progressed, the project grew more and more complex. This experience really taught us the importance of scoping a project and to not go too big and leave room for mistakes.

What's next for Google Maps Memories

There are so many possibilities with Googly Maps Memories! In the future, we plan on adding more ways to discover memories such as a random memory picker, memory of the day showcase, and themed memories. Stay tuned!
