Inspiration

When considering one of the greatest issues that plagues our country, our excessively high amounts of food-waste, we asked ourselves what could be done at the household level to combat this problem? Our answer is GoodTill.

What it does

Our app allows the user to easily keep track of perishable food that they have purchased and keep track of their expiration dates, implementing an easily understandable stoplight-system in order to let the user know how long they have before their food expires. Our app lets the user sign-in with their ShopRite account, which makes it so all perishable items that they have purchased are automatically logged into our app, enabling even more convenient expiration date tracking. In addition, if the user has any non-perishable food items that they may want to donate, our app also provides information regarding foodbanks that the user can donate to in order to support the community.

How we built it

Our app is built with java and html, and is constructed in such a way that seamlessly connects with the ShopRite API, allowing us to smoothly connect with our users.

Challenges and accomplishments that we're proud of

When considering user experience, we had trouble deciding what features we should add in order to make it as easy as possible for the user to reduce waste. This is why we are extremely proud of our automatic product loading feature and food bank access feature. We want there to be no barrier to entry to increasing mindfulness and uplifting the community!

What we learned

In regards to the technical aspects of this project, we learned a great deal in regards to getting a website up and running and working as a team to ensure that all aspects of the project could come together seamlessly and efficiently. As for societal impact, we learned just how much of household food-waste can be attributed to expired food (around 20%!) and is a large reason for why we chose this project.

What's next for GoodTill

In the future, we would love to connect with as many groceries as possible to allow our users to log-in with all their favorite groceries, allowing our convenient features to be used with as many products as possible.
