Inspiration

Food waste is a prominent issue in Canada…

About 47% of all food in Canada is wasted.
1 in 4 Canadians face food insecurity.
If food loss and waste were a country it would be the 3rd biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions.

The Food Stash Foundation aims to reduce food waste by redistributing the food to places that are accessible to those in need. However, our data analysis showed that Food Stash has the potential to leverage the power of their volunteer network to facilitate food distribution.

We created good2go as a site for Food Stash donors and volunteers to communicate efficiently.

What it does

good2go has the following workflow:

Volunteers log into their user profiles.
Volunteers filter for nearby listings.
Volunteers accept ‘pickups’ from donors.
Volunteers deliver the surplus to Food Stash.
Volunteers mark their delivery as completed.
The volunteer profiles log their statistics.

and the cycle continues...

Challenges we ran into

Implementing clean interface and UX for viewing and selecting locations
Implementing the map routes and how we want users to interact with them
Resolving bugs we encountered in the database and node modules

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team was able to communicate and work effectively which resulted in minimal merge conflicts.
We were able to set up most of our intended functionality for good2go. The site is only missing small improvements and future implementations.
We believe good2go will streamline Food Stash's workflow immensely and help mitigate drops in distribution rates.
Users are able to redeem perks from their profile and track their contributions.

What we learned

Learned that having a clear and strong grasp of the project idea streamlines all the other processes
Learned how to set up MySQL locally
Gained familiarity with the Google Maps API
