Inspiration: Creating a pet owner website will enable us to cover the many focus areas and solve a handful of problems at once.

What it does: A website that all types of people associated with pets in any way shape or form, can use to access resources, for the quality of life for pets and animals in St. Louis.

How we built it: We created a database and added dummy data to show off the concept of a centralized resource for pet owners in the city of St. Louis.

Challenges we ran into: Getting the website and the database to talk and communicate was one of the big hurdles we faced.

Accomplishments that we're proud of: Establishing this website and getting the different tabs up and running.

What we learned: We learned to combine php and sql into a website as well as use WordPress to our advantage.

Project Name: St. Louis Loves Pets (stllovespets.com)

Tagline: Make St. Louis Pet-Friendly & Technology User-Friendly

Inspiration: We drew our inspiration from hearing the panel speak on five main challenges that the pet community faces today. We immediately recognized that our audience was made up of different demographics with varying technical skills and the needed were resources were scattered across the web. Our goal was not only to “make St. Louis a pet-friendly” place but also to “make technology user-friendly.” A website that is clean, creative, intuitive, visually attractive and easy to navigate.

What it does: A website that centralizes data by pulling information from different online sources. Such as information on animal shelters, veterinaries, pet stores, pet-friendly restaurants and hotels, dog parks, etc. A website that promotes the use of QR technology as an alternative to using microchips to identify pets and their owners. A website that promotes community participation by rewarding those who actively contribute to the “Pet Hub”.

A website that promotes “Featured Pets” - shelter pets based on the number of days in the shelter. Promotion of “Featured Vets” – Vets who contribute to the “Pet Hub” community by actively participating in “Ask a Vet” Q&A. Promotion of “Featured Super Heroes” - pet owners who actively contribute to “Pet Hub” by leaving reviews, ratings, comments, etc. and in turn receive points which can be redeemed for coupons, free visits to Vet, etc. Promotion of “Featured Pet Store” – pet stores that actively contribute to the community by organizing events, awareness clinics, etc.

In other words, “a one-stop shop for all your pet needs.”

How we built it: We used WordPress and PHP for front-end development and MySQL for database back-end development.

Challenges we ran into: Getting different APIs to merge into one seamless listing was the biggest challenge. Other challenges were getting the front-end queries to communicate with the back-end database, which we later overcame.

Accomplishments that we're proud of: Working together as a team and finding creative solutions to challenges faced by pet community. Building a prototype that addresses all five challenge areas in such a short amount of time and with limited team skill sets.

What we learned: We learned to combine PHP and MySQL into a website as well as use WordPress to our advantage.
