Inspiration
As a new transfer student at GMU, I faced challenges in finding friends who shared my academic interests and career aspirations. While I made some acquaintances, it was difficult to determine if we were taking similar courses. After a semester of struggling, a group of us decided to address this issue by strategizing our class schedules together. However, managing this information through texts proved cumbersome.
To streamline our coordination efforts, we brainstormed the idea of creating a campus platform where students could connect, share courses, sync schedules, and attend events together. This platform would serve as a hub for fostering friendships based on academic pursuits and shared campus experiences. Features such as course sharing, event planning, chat functionality, and calendar synchronization were envisioned to simplify the process of coordinating schedules and finding like-minded peers.
The platform aimed to enhance the social and academic experience for students at GMU, offering a centralized solution for building connections and navigating campus life more seamlessly.
What it does
For now, we can only add students with information and have a semi-running login/signup page. It has most of the CRUD functions implemented.
How we built it
With JavaScript, using mern stack.
Challenges we ran into
Because we are familiar with Postman, switching to Mongodb was very hard for us. We couldn't figure out how to run it, once we closed a project. It connected seamlessly the first time. But wouldn't connect the second time around.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We managed to finish routing pages, and going in between pages and learned crud for our first project!
What we learned
We learned javascript in 2 days.
What's next for GMU Friends
Hopefully, by next hackathon at Mason, we will be fluent in javascript and have a finished product to show. We are highly interested in turning this project to a fruitful product. So, we will continue to work on this.
