Language: It is what makes us human. Yet, in our increasingly interconnected world, many students miss out on the opportunity to truly engage with diverse cultures through authentic language practice. GlobeLang addresses this challenge by connecting students in fifth to twelfth grades with native speakers from across the globe. By transforming language learning into an immersive cultural exchange, GlobeLang not only enhances students' linguistic abilities but also broadens their perspectives and fosters a profound sense of global community.

Inspiration

As students trying to acquire Spanish, we both find it very difficult to learn languages from static websites. They just don't carry the same feeling as a real person. With the advances in Artificial Intelligence, one might suggest using Artificial Intelligence to replace this, but part of the mission behind Globe Lang is to help foster a sense of global connectivity and community. In this day and age, the internet makes our world more interconnected than ever, yet human communication is at its lowest point in years. We want to restore this sense of human connection. With that, GlobeLang was born.

How we built it

We developed GlobeLang using a combination of web technologies and APIs to ensure seamless communication between students and native speakers. We used HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python to power different elements of the project. Our team experimented with features such as Node.js, OpenAI APIs, Google Firebase, and Google Cloud APIs, but our efforts did not pan out, and we decided that it is more important to stick to our mission of language empowerment.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into numerous challenges during this project, ranging from issues with translation APIs to CSS design issues. For instance, we originally intended for a translation feature on this page, that would allow users to translate words they did not know using a translation API. However, we soon realized that this is really difficult. We had to scrap that piece, and stick to the core principle: allowing users to converse and acquire language skills. In addition, we also looked into an AI integration, but that also got shut down very quickly, due to API issues.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of successfully creating a platform that bridges cultural gaps and provides students with meaningful language practice. Our real-time communication feature, combined with a user-friendly design, has the potential to make a big difference in this world. In addition, this is both of our first time experimenting with web development, so we are proud of creating such a powerful tool.

What we learned

Through the development of GlobeLang, we learned the importance of organization. In addition, we also discovered that careful planning and testing are crucial for development and ensuring a positive user experience. Additionally, the project taught us valuable lessons in managing real-time interactions and the significance of fostering a supportive and inclusive community.

What's next for GlobeLang

We plan to complete the website by integrating AI features and a translation API before deploying it. Our next step is to promote this tool in countries with fewer resources compared to the United States or Canada, aiming to help students learn English. In the modern world, English proficiency is essential for accessing job opportunities and achieving career success. We believe it is crucial to provide this generation with the ability to learn English, regardless of their socio-economic status. By expanding access to high-quality language education, we hope to make a meaningful impact on students' futures and level the playing field.
