Inspiration
We were inspired by the rich culture and history that disco has brought to the United States. It made us think in a more global perspective: what dance styles and music have led to the growth of other region's cultural history? We realized global perspective which educates people about styles of music and dance all around the world allows for greater understanding of other cultures, and therefore greater unity with countries even thousands of miles away, and allows people to enjoy learning new types of dance and music at the same time.
What it does
Global Groover is an app and website that allows the viewer to learn about dance styles of countries all around the world. The user clicks on the globe in the middle of the screen and is taken to another page with information about dance and music history in a random region in the world. Meanwhile, music from that reason plays in the background to create an immersive experience. Every time the disco ball is clicked, facts about a new country's music and dance history is presented, along with new music. Another page on the app/website talks about disco culture in the United States itself to educate people about the culture in their own country.
How we built it
This website/app was built on vscode using the languages javascript, css, and html. css was used to create the design of the website, including where the buttons were located, the colors used for the layout, the titles, and more. html and javascript were used for the foundation of the website, including the functionality of the buttons and pages. html was used to incorporate artificial intelligence into the project to ensure that when the globe was clicked, a random region's information was given. The logo was then creating using graphic designing tools to ensure it was a unique branding for our website.
Challenges we ran into
There were many challenges throughout this challenge, but we learned to work through them while working through this project. One challenge faced was figuring out how to use a python function in a java script file due to the difference in languages while trying to incorporate the artificial intelligence component. Another major challenge was learning how to use two new programming languages, as it required watching multiple crash course video and then understanding how to adapt the skills taught in those crash course videos to fit our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are incredibly proud of the global perspective that we have incorporated into the project as it illustrates the versatility of our app/website. We are also proud of the fact that the team has learned to use new programming languages through this hackathon, and has learned how to efficiently use the skills they have learned to create innovative designs, such as our app/website Global Groover. In addition, we learned many amazing new skills, such as incorporating gifs into our website instead of solely still images, and learned how to design our own logo for the project, illustrating the links between the arts and the technical skills like coding.
What we learned
We learned the amount of work, time, and attention coding takes and the amount of time and effort computer scientists put into their work. We also learned that coding is not just a technical skill., In truth, it incorporates many artistic factors, such as the positioning and layout of the buttons and titles, and more. We also learned how to use two new languages, increasing our repertoire and teaching us many valuable skills. Most importantly, we learned the span of our abilities and realized we have a lot more ability than we may have first thought before beginning this project.
What's next for Global Groove
The next step for Global Groove would be to make it span even more countries and make it even more interactive. Perhaps we can incorporate a form where people place their own country, or a region that is of interest and once the form is filled with the proper information, that country is added to the artificial intelligence. In addition, we believe we can add more games into the app/website, such as a game where you guess the region that a certain song or dance is from to make the site more interactive and enjoyable, but also make it even more educational.
