Inspiration

Seeing the hungry homeless people of Santa Cruz every day. As well as seeing our fellow college students hungry late at night, with the dining halls closed.

What it does

An app that fights food waste by repurposing unsold, last minute perishable foods from restaurants and grocery stores. It connects food business with customers and hunger relief organizations, allowing them to choose whether to sell their food at a discounted price or donate it to people in need before they close. Users enter their location and search nearby deals, and then request to pick up their food. Hunger relief organizations are shown surplus food in the region and given the option to send a driver to transport the food.

How we built it

We sketched out what the different app pages would look like. Then began programming in Android studio using Java.

Challenges we ran into

Everyone on the team only knew Java and had no recent experience using Android Studio, so we all had to learn while we worked on the project. We also did not know how to use GIT, making file sharing very difficult and caused us to resort to copy-pasting on google drive.

What's next for GiveOut

We hope to expand out of the Santa Cruz area into larger markets in California
