Inspiration
Every time I text my mom “Bet, that’s lowkey fire,” she calls me asking if I’m safe. My dad once heard me say “I’m dead” and legit checked my pulse. 😅 Gen Z slang isn’t just words it’s a whole new language that leaves Millennials, Gen X, and Boomers feeling like they need Google Translator for their kids.
That sparked the idea: What if we built an AI tool that bridges this generational gap?
What it does
GenZlator takes a sentence in boring adult English and instantly turns it into spicy Gen Z slang or flips any confusing TikTok lingo back into plain, “mom-approved” English. It’s basically a linguistic peace treaty between your “IYKYK” friend and your confused aunt who still uses “LOL” to mean “lots of love.”
How I built it?
Built a clean React + Tailwind web app.
Integrated Google Gemini’s API to generate natural, funny slang translations.
Focused on a vibe-first UI
Tested it by throwing every chaotic TikTok phrase at it (“rizz,” “delulu,” “no cap”) until it didn’t break.
Challenges I ran into
API tantrums: Gemini refused to listen at first. 404 errors everywhere.
Too helpful AI: Initially, it kept giving five versions and definitions (“Here are multiple slang levels…”). I had to teach it to just give one Gen Z answer.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Trained the model to give short, clear slang instead of essays.
Made people laugh while testing it.
Learned how to handle APIs without breaking everything.
What I learned
Building simple things isn’t simple when you want them to feel human, funny, and shareable.
AI is powerful, but humor, cultural context, and vibe-checking are still very human jobs.
People love projects that solve tiny but relatable problems.
What's next for GenZlator
Daily Slang Drop: Learn one new Gen Z term each day so you don’t get roasted in group chats.
Battle Mode: A fun quiz that asks, “How Gen Z are you really?” and isn’t afraid to call you out if you flop.
Mobile App: Because parents will 100% need this on the go when trying to decode their kids’ texts.
SaaS Platform: I want to turn GenZlator into a web-based SaaS tool like Slack or Teams integration so workplaces can “speak Gen Z” too. HR emails should finally sound fun.
