Inspiration
A third of the world's food is thrown away every year! In addition over 10 million individuals in the U.S are food insecure. This means they are unable to reliably provide nutritious and adequate food. The third issue this project aims to combat is climate change. When food is thrown away it rots in landfills, it produces methane, a greenhouse gas that is even more potent than carbon dioxide and contributes to global warming. It’s a small step forward in the fight against hunger and global warming.
What it does
Generous Delicacies is a service that connects food-insecure families with restaurants for the purpose of providing nutritional meals to the families and decreasing food waste that occurs in restaurants. This is done by creating a website where donors can create postings regarding excessive meals providing their company name, location, and description of meals. The meal postings from various restaurants are then visible to the recipients who in turn reserve individual meals and proceed to pick them up. This includes but is not limited to food that was ordered online but not picked up by the customer and meals that were cooked, but not purchased by any consumer.
How we built it
We built the website with Html CSS and vanilla javascript & used FireBase!
Challenges we ran into
During this hackathon, we ran into a few major challenges. One of the team members who had various responsibilities quit before the end of the project completion without informing the rest of the team. We had to reorganize and come up with a new plan on the spot. In addition, the geographic location of the team members varies and we had to work with the different time zones which brought along a few challenges.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Teamwork & time- management!
What we learned
During this hackathon, we learned about idea generation and how to efficiently work as a team. We also had to learn web development skills and concepts that were previously unknown to all team members. Time Management skills and teamwork!
