Inspiration
Remember when Pokemon Go came out, everyone was excited to hunt for Pokemon 24/7 on the go? Now with FreePS, you can hunt for freebies everywhere anytime.
What it does
FreePS is an android app that connects and accelerates the supply and demand of freebies within a community, with two main features: finding the freebies and posting them.
The app uses Google API to navigate users to nearby freebies, whether it be just around the curb, in an empty lot, or by a dumpster. The user can them access the detailed description and claim the freebie.
For posting freebies, the app allows users to anonymously post items that they want to get rid of at the their current location.
We believe that FreePS ultimately creates a better connected community and healthier market between those who want to get rid of their things, and those who are in need, or find thrill in searching for them.
How we built it
We took some time at the beginning to really flesh out the idea by creating detailed mockups, then went on to delegating the front end and back end work.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was that half of the team had to learn Android Studios within a short amount of time, the next biggest challenge was that half the team was remote, which created additional difficulty in cross-learning for Android Studios, among other communication obstacles.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud to have created a minimal viable product with the above challenges (and more) along the way, and that our team ultimately powered through it together, remotely.
What we learned
From how poor the documentation for Android Studios and Google was, we learned the importance of documentation (while cursing at our laptop screens), and how much it can accelerate and streamline one's learning and development.
What's next for FreePS
First of all, we would like to refine the UI to create a better user experience, then implement additional features that we had decided to not pursue in consideration of the time constraint. Features include, having both a grid view and a map view for freebies map.
